Burien Kids Day 2009 is Fun for the Family
September 21, 2009
More than 1,000 people visited Burien Fire Station 28 last weekend to celebrate “Kids Day”, an annual community event organized by Fire District #2. The weather was perfect, large trucks were on display, and there were plenty of free hot dogs for everyone.
King County Fire District #2 (Burien/Normandy Park Fire) has established a tradition of hosting an event at Burien Fire Headquarters for kids and parents to learn about public safety and to have a fun filled Saturday at no cost to the individual. This is made possible through donations made by many local businesses and organizations. Airport & Burien Towing volunteered to help by transporting and donating vehicles for auto extrications, as well as displaying a 35 ton tow truck and a 1935 Ford hot rod tow truck from their antique collection.
Kids of all ages enjoyed the extensive variety of activities. Small diamater fire hoses and knock down fire displays were set up and operated by the SeaTac Explorers for young firefighters to enjoy. North Highline Fire District allowed families to tour their fire engines and pose in the seats for pictures. For the young kids with endless energy, inflatable toys were on site to help mom and dad get a little break while watching the kids burn off some calories. For those looking to learn about fire safety, Burien/Normandy Park firefighters taught interactive classes inside a 2 story smoke house, complete with emergency exits and lighted fire displays. Other activities included a candy search, free child identification bracelets, a helicopter landing by the King County Sherriff’s Office, prize drawings, face paintings, 100 foot high angle rescue show, multiple vehicle automobile extrications, along with many other fun things for kids to do and watch.

An auto extrication is a rescue scenario that includes the removal of persons who are trapped inside a vehicle. Some cars involved in accidents are so badly misshapen that the doors and windows will only open by use of excessive force. Because these types of accidents have become more common, local fire departments train firefighters to use heavy duty hydraulic tools to remove patients from vehicles. Burien Fire performed 2 auto extrications on vehicles donated by Burien & Airport Towing. The extrications are a main attraction, and typically the hilight of the day for spectators.

Airport Towing & Burien Towing have been donating cars to the Burien Fire Department for this type of training for many years. The photo above features Burien firefighters putting on an extrication display for Kids Day 1999. The Burien Fire Department plans on hosting Kids Day next year to continue the annual tradition. If the City of Burien acts quickly and secures a new location to replace their outdated station, the event may be held at a brand new fire station in 2010 or 2011.
Weekend Parades & Car Shows
July 8, 2009
Perfect summer weather the last week of June helped local parades and community events to be more successful than previous festivities in years past. In South King County the weekend kicked off with the Seatac International Festival and Parade. The event featured international displays, foods, and entertainment at Angle Lake Park located in the city of Seatac.
Airport Towing participated in the parade during the morning hours of the International Festival. Driver/Manager Daryl Wilson and his supportive wife Heather showed off their hot rod tow truck that is stored with the Storer Tow Truck Collection. “The Flame” is a 1935 Ford truck complimented by a Holmes Wrecker Unit and a 305-cubic-inch engine. The Wilson’s proudly displayed large photos of the company’s founder and his son on the sides of the truck as they drove along the parade route. Founder Mark Storer and his son Brian died in an airplane crash nearly one year ago and the classic hot rod was given to Daryl by the Storer family.

Just a few miles away Victory Outreach Church of Seattle hosted their annual hot rod & low rider car show. Hundreds of people gathered to see custom rides, some that were dropped down to just a few inches above the pavement and others with hydraulics that were raised so high their wheels were coming off the ground. Most of the cars on display were large bodied classics that were either dipped, raised, slammed, and dropped with a full working set of hydraulic pumps in the trunk. Other vehicles included a variety of classics and customs, including Airport Towing’s 1933 Ford lowrider tow truck with custom chrome suspension and undercarraige. The Seattle area towing company participated in the show with two hot rods on display and also participated as a sponsor of the event. Upcoming events around the South King County area include the Des Moines Waterland Festival and White Center Jubilee Days.

VP Climbs Stairs for Charity
April 7, 2009
I was honored to be part of a tremendous fund raising effort for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at this years Big Climb Seattle. With 300 participants on our team, we were able to raise over $40,000 for charity. Together we battled 1,311 stairs and 788 vertical feet of elevation all in the name of our sponsored patient.
Our team was named “Climbing for Caleb” because a 2 year old cancer patient inspired us to give it all we had on a cold Spring morning. Caleb Thorsteinson, nephew of North Highline Firefighter Scott Thorsteinson has been battling cancer for about a year. His family and friends have drawn together to back him in the difficult fight against Leukemia. Airport Towing has a close relationship with the North Highline Fire District as we have donated vehicles to them for training, they performed honor guard services at our founder & sons memorial service, and I personally volunteered for the district and consider the Thorsteinson’s personal friends.
In our effort, team Climbing for Caleb finished 4th out of 234 total teams for time and I personally finished 125/2931 with a time of 10:39. We are hoping to finish first in fund raising as a team. If you would like to support my fundraising efforts or help the progress of the team go to my personal page and fill out a pledge form. All donations go to a great cause and have made a huge difference in many people’s lives.
I was truly honored to be a small part of such a large effort to help fight blood cancers. The event was fun as well as inspiring and I encourage anyone in the Seattle area who appreciates a challenge to sign up for next years event. Climbing the Northwest’s tallest building can be intimidating, as is taking on something as terrifying as cancer, but it is possible if you face it head on and take it one step at a time.
Seattle Snowstorm keeps tow trucks on the move.
December 31, 2008
More than a week of snowfall covered the greater Seattle area and caused vehicles to slip, slide, and crash all over the place this week. Under nearly a foot of snow and ice, the Airport Towing crew rolled out of the Burien office in full force and stayed out until it finally melted away.
The weather caused major disruption all accross the Puget Sound area, stalling commuters, delaying truckers, and putting vehicles of all shapes and sizes in the ditch. Fortunately, the Airport Towing trucks were running nonstop until the roads were cleared and our customers were rescued.
Local freight was a particularly large problem this holiday season as many shipments were unable to reach their destination due to unprecedented snow and ice conditions. Some trucks had frozen brakes and other components. Many semis lost traction on steep hills as they made their way to the loading docks. For businesses on the receiving end, the delays were frustrating at best.
At Airport Towing, we pride ourselves on our ability to solve transportation problems and we are working continuously to expand our quality and range of services to better serve our customers. This holiday season was our first true test of our brand new heavy duty tow truck in adverse weather conditions. Though the truck performed well on Snoqualmie Pass and in other areas last year, this was our first opportunity to navigate and recover trucks throughout Seattle’s downtown core under heavy snow and ice with our newly built 35 ton unit. Our Peterbilt truck has state of the art equipment and towing / recovery capabilities that help us improve effeciency and safety. This Winter it has certainly passed the test of being one of our most capable trucks.
It is common knowledge in the towing industry that the worse the weather gets to be, the more tow truck operators can count on being out in it. As this years Winter storm took the Northwest by surprise, Airport Towing was ready with snow chains and manpower. We prepare for the worst weather conditions every year. Our goal is to keep Seattle moving as we move into 2009, and for years to come.
Family History Behind Airport Towing
August 12, 2008
Mark Storer started Airport Towing 20 years ago with a loan from his father, a single tow truck, and a supportive wife. While running a day care out of her home, Lynette answered the phones for the business 24 hours a day. Both were hard working and committed themselves to providing a better life for their children.
Brian, the youngest child of three quickly developed an interest in the towing company. He was always the first to volunteer to ride with his dad when Mark was called to assist the police at an accident scene, or when he had to go up to Canada to pick up a rental car. Brian always wanted to work with his dad. He loved watching his father pick up cars from the cab of the tow truck, and occasionally work the controls when Mark thought the situation was safe for his youngest boy.
When Mark & Lynette acquired first acquired property in Burien to use for the business, all three children found themselves to be a part of the company. The entire family spent their evenings and summers at the office. Everyone in the family worked when needed. Everyone worked hard, including Brian who started driving a tow truck full time as soon as he turned 18; right out of high school.
Since 1988 our family has committed to providing quality towing services to the greater Seattle area, and we will continue serving our customers with the same values that Mark and Brian worked hard to establish.
Ron Storer, Mark’s brother, along with his family created a slide show as a tribute to Mark and Brian. It contains photographs from throughout their lives. Many thanks to Ron, Denise, & Jenny for putting together this excellent video for the memorial service.
